Firefighter Size-Up Checklist (On-Scene Report Guide)
What is a Fireground Size-Up?
A size-up is a continuous process of gathering and evaluating information during an incident, beginning at dispatch and continuing through termination. It provides the foundation for all fireground decisions, including strategy, tactics, and resource allocation.
This process — often referred to as a fire scene size-up — provides the foundation for all fireground decision-making and is typically delivered as an on-scene report that establishes command, communicates conditions, and sets the direction for incoming units.
The First-Due On-Scene Report
The first-arriving unit is responsible for delivering a clear, structured on-scene report that gives incoming companies an immediate understanding of the situation.
A strong on-scene report typically includes:
Unit identification and arrival
Address confirmation
Building and occupancy description
Conditions (fire and smoke)
Initial actions being taken
Establishment of command
Example:
“Engine 1 is on scene at 123 Main Street. Two-story residential structure with smoke showing from the Alpha side. Engine 1 will be advancing a line for fire attack. Establishing Main Street Command.”
Firefighter Size-Up Checklist
In real-world conditions, firefighters don’t have time to recall every detail from memory.
A simple, durable reference ensures that critical information — including water supply, life hazard, and strategy — is communicated clearly on every call. This fire scene size-up checklist provides a consistent framework for evaluating conditions and communicating critical information.
Fireground Size-Up Checklist:
Confirm Dispatch Address
Number of Floors and Type of Occupancy
Conditions Found (Fire / Smoke)
Life Hazard (Known or Potential Victims)
Water Supply and Layout
Exposures
Mode of Attack (Investigative / Offensive / Defensive)
Establish Command

Why Structure Matters Under Stress
Fireground size-up must be fast, repeatable, and consistent. Under stress, it’s easy to miss key details or communicate incomplete information.
Using a structured approach ensures that critical factors — including water supply, life hazard, and strategy — are addressed every time, leading to better coordination and safer operations.
Turning Training into Action
Size-up is taught through training and repetition, but in real-world conditions, quick reference can make a difference.
A physical size-up checklist provides:
Immediate reference under stress
Consistent reporting across crews
Reinforcement of trained decision-making
Response Tags provide a durable, on-scene reference for delivering clear, consistent size-up reports under real fireground conditions.
Designed to reinforce structured communication, these tags help ensure critical information — including occupancy, conditions, water supply, and strategy — is addressed quickly and consistently.

Hanging Response Tags measure 5" x 3" and feature Structure Fire response on one side and Auto Accident response on the other. A mounting hole allows the tag to be carried on a lanyard or attached with a trigger snap.
Mounted Response Tags measure 7.5" x 3" with both sets of information on one side and four mounting holes. Self-tapping screws are included for door or dash mounting.
Built Around Real Fireground Use
This checklist reflects widely accepted fireground size-up practices, focusing on clear communication, rapid assessment, and command establishment.
It’s designed to support how firefighters are trained to think and operate — not replace it.
